About Empire Hotel

The Empire Hotel in the mining town of Queenstown is a Tasmanian icon. Built in 1901 it dates back to the wealth of the mining era at the turn of the 20th Century. It is the grand old lady of the west coast and has a prominent facade in the town streetscape. Inside is a National Trust listed staircase made from Tasmanian Blackwood. The raw timber was shipped to England, carved and sent back to Queenstown where it has enjoyed a rich history and is admired by all. The restaurant is set in a large traditional dining room with a sense of the grandeur of the past. In cold conditions the open fire is lit for added warmth and ambience. Accommodation is modest, clean and comfortable. Opposite is the meticulously restored ABT Railway that attracts visitors worldwide and runs to through spectacular rainforest to Strahan. Queenstown is noted for its 'moonscape' a result of many years of mining. There is a local underground mine tour, a mining museum, a public golf course, and the area is popular for walking, fishing and four wheel drive tracks. Queenstown is a unique destination and the Empire a hotel not to be missed.

Great service and value, we booked on last minute deals. Shared facilities but the manager was helpful and gave us s closer room to bathrooms. Some upgraded bathrooms looked and were amazing, we slept soundly in the dated but cosy room after a drink in the bar down stairs. With continental breakfast at such a good price it's value for $ would stay again. History all over the place and the locals happy to chat with travelers.

Hotel in a small town doing the best it can. New bathrooms have recently been put in, which are quite nice and modern. The food is not bad, the staff are helpful and the venue has history, if you're into that. You must bring your own soap shampoo etc. As they don't supply any. It suffers from the order the town is in, but it's doing well all things considered

Fantastic old hotel. Wonderful history and the meal was superb. I would recommend a visit or a stay at this site. Must see the staircase.
